City of Ink: Where tattoos and artwork collide

Where does a savvy connoisseur of art go to find the next vanguard artist? How about a fantasy land tattoo parlor called City of Ink!

POPular: An Art Exhibition, held at City of Ink, showcased talent from across the country and at to the tattoo shop. There was a little something for everyone when it came to price and style.

All kinds of influences ranging from Japanese pop art to socially conscience messages were infused in the exhibition. Corey Davis was one of the featured tattoo artists, and he’s been putting on the show for the past four years. Davis even contributed his own art to the viewing. Jasmine Boston, another artist who took the spotlight, earned first prize for her piece.

Kai Lin Art gallery’s eighth exhibition, Grace, opens this Friday, March 19. The exhibition features the lush, ethereal work of three female painters, including Mary Farmer, Sun Hong and Anne Davnes-Elser.

Here’s one huge benefit of Atlanta’s disastrous economic situation: the cockamamie proposal to replace the central library is DOA.

A lot of people, maybe including you, aren’t so fond of the chunky, brutalist structure. Or maybe that unpleasant memory you have was less about its look than the surly attitude of the staff, a result of long years of organizational dysfunction and bad morale in the library system, which we’re hopeful is a thing of the past. No matter your opinion, our downtown library happens to be the last project of the pathbreaking modernist architect Marcel Breuer, capping his extraordinary career.

Last year, before the plan to replace it crashed head-on into economic reality – and a growing, vocal constituency for preserving our local modernist legacy – Jonathan wrote this article about the situation in Metropolis.

Researching that story introduced Jonathan to the coming thing in libraries. The trend is away from hushed places built to house books and toward mixed-use, multi-media cultural centers, often seen as engines of city-center regeneration. Get your green on at St. Pat’s Fest!

This year marks the 128^th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Atlanta, and the St. Pat’s Festival at Underground has activities for kids—and kids at heart. MDT Hint: Check out the Budweiser Clydesdales and Grand Marshal and football legend Vince Dooley in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade!

Events at this year’s festival include live music on the Kenny’s Alley Stage, featuring Shanveen, Alyssa Pucket, Yacht Rock Schooner and U2 tribute band, Desire. The Lucky Charm Stage brings Coastal Talent Kids playing all day.

Plus, be sure to visit The Lower Fountain Stage for live music and traditional dance expos, including Vistoso Bosses, Zoe Myers, Cregan O’Brien Irish Dance, Treble Reel Contest, Mulligan School of Irish Dance and the Atlanta Irish Dance Troupe.

As if the live performances weren’t enough, the Kids Zone will have a vendor’s market and interactive kid’s activities, and the festival will play host to a barrage of characters such as bag pipers, magicians and even a barbershop quartet!

This weekend only Flux Projects, in conjunction with Lauri Stallings of gloATL, presents Bloom at Lenox Square Mall. This site-specific dance and multimedia installation is a highly emotional and physical performance taking place throughout the Lenox concourses.

Each hour-long performance will feature the gloATL troupe, who will be joined by spoken word artist and hip-hop producer Big Rube, as well as musicians Tom Sherwood and Brad Ritchie from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Sonic Generator.

Performance times are Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13 and 14 at 4 p.m.
