Here’s one huge benefit of Atlanta’s disastrous economic situation: the cockamamie proposal to replace the central library is DOA.

A lot of people, maybe including you, aren’t so fond of the chunky, brutalist structure. Or maybe that unpleasant memory you have was less about its look than the surly attitude of the staff, a result of long years of organizational dysfunction and bad morale in the library system, which we’re hopeful is a thing of the past. No matter your opinion, our downtown library happens to be the last project of the pathbreaking modernist architect Marcel Breuer, capping his extraordinary career.

Last year, before the plan to replace it crashed head-on into economic reality – and a growing, vocal constituency for preserving our local modernist legacy – Jonathan wrote this article about the situation in Metropolis.

Researching that story introduced Jonathan to the coming thing in libraries. The trend is away from hushed places built to house books and toward mixed-use, multi-media cultural centers, often seen as engines of city-center regeneration. MDT Hint: His article about that has just been published in Miller-McCune.

You can read some of Jonathan’s other articles – about architecture, preservation, travel and many other things – at his site, www.penpowerpublishing.com.
