Maggie Hasbrouck was not born a painter. In fact, she didn’t even tap into her talent until she was in college. “I had no idea I was an artist until then,” she says. “I went to the University of New Mexico, and I thought the landscape had a wonderful creative energy. From there I went to graduate school at the University of Illinois and got my M.A. in Fine Art.”

For the last 15 years she has been a fixture at the Bill Lowe Gallery where she has turned out show after successful show. “You make your own work and think it’s all yours, but there is a lot of influence with the place you show,” Hasbrouck says. “My work resonates with Bill, and vice versa. I felt a really strong pull towards Bill. I followed my intuition and it turned out to be right.”

Hasbrouck works in a unique medium that she developed called photoencaustic. “I start with a large digital photograph, then paint on it with resin and hot wax,” she explains. “I work in many layers. A piece takes about three months, because when you use oils with wax, the wax slows down the drying process.”
