OXXO’s eco-friendly practices go beyond their solvent. Instead of the standard dry cleaners’ boiler room, which sends out chemicals into the air by way of smoke or steam, OXXO Care Cleaners uses a machine that actually takes any lingering chemicals out of the clothes.  

“It’s great for people with allergies,” Antun says. “Since we remove the chemicals, there’s nothing going into your pores. It’s better for people and pets [around you] because they aren’t inhaling chemicals.”

The method also preserves the color of your clothing. “With no chemicals to break down the clothes, it extends their lifetime,” Antun adds.  

The boutique-style store also offers comfortable amenities (the ample air conditioning flows and music plays softly) and some convenient features that make picking up your green clean laundry much easier. First-time customers answer questions about their dry cleaning particulars (do you like starch, do you like a crease, etc.) so there’s no need to  answer questions every time they come in. While the store stays open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., each first-time customer is issued an ATM-like card and a bag and can even set up a pre-paid plan. Unless you’re willing to pick up that bowl and lick it in public, a gesture which might go unnoticed since everybody in the place is having such a good time, you might want to order a second helping of the bread plates to have handy.

There are also several salads and vegetable items, like grilled asparagus and pimiento peppers stuffed with goat cheese. The platanos – those hard Caribbean bananas that must be cooked – are remarkable, thanks to the culinary excellence of the Eclipse di Luna chefs. Trust us, Threaders, you may not have cared for plantains before, but, from this kitchen, you’ll leave wanting more. The platanos at Eclipse di Luna are a caramelized confection, deeply sweet and a perfect compliment to the braised meat tapas you may choose for dinner. You could actually order the platanos for dessert, but then you’d have to forego the intensely thick, rich flan.

Come early to play in the Lose the Shoes Barefoot Soccer Tournament - entry fees for the tournament go to support GRS’ mission, which is to provide African youth with the knowledge, life skills and support to live HIV free. Upbeat is about the African Children’s Choir, and Mothers of a Nation is both a film and photography exhibition about a group of empowered Ugandan women living with HIV and their fight for survival through sustainable farming methods.

Other Pamoja Penda highlights include guest speakers such as UAPO founder Brittany Merrill and a sustainable market selling wares from Atlanta and Africa like recycled paper bead necklaces, eco-conscious clothing and Tom’s shoes. Clash Titan Clash! is a puppet version of the 1981 Harry Housen Clash of the Titans film, which features the Greek myth of Perseus cutting off the head of Medusa. “This is a show I’ve wanted to do for years,” says Yates. “The original is one of my all time favorite movies and until the recent remake came along, the original film had been pretty underground due to its release right around the same time as Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.”  

Now realizing his longstanding dream, Yates is pulling out all the stops for the first fully produced evening adult puppet show at Dad’s Garage in quite some time. Clash Titan Clash! includes an array of in-house cameras to project the live show, as well as three Greek gods who are puppeteering the show while interacting with each other. Finally, Yates and the Dad’s crew turned an army of 12-inch figures into mythical Greek puppets for your viewing pleasure! According to Yates, Clash Titan Clash! is a spectacular, low budget spectacular! “It’s big, dumb fun with puppets and Greek myth,” he says.  

In addition to Yates, Clash Titan Clash! also features other Dad’s Garage favorites such as Scott Warren and Amber Nash, the star female ensemble member in the troupe. This is also one of the first theatrical performances overseen by Dad’s new artistic director Kevin Gillese, formerly of the internationally acclaimed Rapid Fire Theatre.   

Clash Titan Clash! opens this Friday, March 12 and runs through April 3 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m.

London Bistro attracts a fun, friendly crowd with its innovative weekly events and English-Southern fusion menu. “We wanted to have the most unique restaurant-lounge catering to Atlantans from all over the world,” says General Manager Godfrey Tago. “We also planned our menu with a British influence and Southern staples so that everyone could both enjoy and afford it.”  

Favorites on the London Bistro menu include the number one seller fish and chips, which is directly off a classic pub menu. The fried or blackened tilapia fish is served with bistro fries. The Cambridge crab cakes are another popular choice and are two jumbo lump crab cakes served with a citrus salad and mango capers. Although the menu is heavily impacted by British and Southern American tradition, there are also Indian favorites like the Oxford samosas, which are flaky dough pockets stuffed with ground beef and served with citrus bouquet garni and the Leeds chicks, a curry chicken with coconut rice. Although it may sound strange, Indian cuisine is a crowd favorite in London, where the Indian community is a long-standing and influential cultural addition.  

All this food have your mouth watering? London Bistro and Lounge also features signature drinks and other libations to pair with your meal. After dinner and drinks, Tago encourages patrons to stay a while and enjoy the sound track, with a different musical sensibility than you may find in other Atlanta nightspots. “Our music is different here,” he says. We play all past anthems and older top 40 hits that people really love.”

Surely no householder chants the real estate mantra “location, location, location” more gratefully than those lucky enough to make their homes in the neighborhoods surrounding Piedmont Park. Not everyone can manage it. The same goes for restaurants. There’s only one, in fact, that gets the full benefit of our city’s most glorious greenspace. That’s Park Tavern, which occupies the rustic stone structure, originally a stable, plus an expansive patio just within the park’s southeastern corner. The panorama across the big meadow toward the Midtown skyline is a stunner and one unmatched by any other Midtown eatery

Park Tavern has been around for years, as a brewpub with a pretty standard bar menu. But within the last year things have changed. A cool beer on the patio still beckons during a sunny stroll in the park. The restaurant still runs its schedule of concerts and events that make use of the meadow’s acres. Inside, the look remains mountain-lodge chic – stack-stone walls and fireplace, dark wood beams and arts-and-crafts-style detailing (though the sound and video systems have been updated). But the big change is in the food.

A new team in the kitchen is doing it all from scratch. That includes executive chef Ramiro Rivera, an alumnus of Horseradish Grill, and Chapin Vilasineekul who oversees the considerable portion of the menu given over to sushi. Now this is not classic Japanese sushi; Vilasineekul, as a matter of fact, is a Thai-Hawaiian. Purists might scoff at offerings like the Kobe Culotte, but that would be their loss. This is thin beef medallions seared just enough to acquire a light charred crust but still carpaccio-red within, accompanied by truffle-scented matchstick fries and two yummy sauces, wasabi cream and hot mustard. The plate appeals to both eye and palate. Ample enough to share or be the centerpiece of one person’s meal, it’s also a bargain at $14.99 – and just about the priciest item available.

Overall, Park Tavern still does very approachable bar food. There are mainly small plates – sushi and otherwise – that are easily nibbled and shared, plus a few baskets and sandwiches. MDT Hint: Be sure to check out the new burger offerings! It’s informal food for a relaxed setting but very well executed. The pulled-pork sandwich, for example, is stuffed with exceptionally tender meat and slathered with a punchy, rich, brick-red barbecue sauce. Complement that with the simple jicama slaw – crunchy, cooling and light. Ceviche – with a salad-like tomato-to-fish ratio – is refreshing and mild, without the acid bite and intense chili of some other versions. It’s accessible, which seems true of all the offerings here.

We know you have fond memories of the old Park Tavern but it’s time to make some new ones Threaders! So, cleanse your mind because this place just might become your go-to destination not just for all its amazing events but for its new menu as well. Especially if you are lucky enough to live around Piedmont Park.
