Surely no householder chants the real estate mantra “location, location, location” more gratefully than those lucky enough to make their homes in the neighborhoods surrounding Piedmont Park. Not everyone can manage it. The same goes for restaurants. There’s only one, in fact, that gets the full benefit of our city’s most glorious greenspace. That’s Park Tavern, which occupies the rustic stone structure, originally a stable, plus an expansive patio just within the park’s southeastern corner. The panorama across the big meadow toward the Midtown skyline is a stunner and one unmatched by any other Midtown eatery

Park Tavern has been around for years, as a brewpub with a pretty standard bar menu. But within the last year things have changed. A cool beer on the patio still beckons during a sunny stroll in the park. The restaurant still runs its schedule of concerts and events that make use of the meadow’s acres. Inside, the look remains mountain-lodge chic – stack-stone walls and fireplace, dark wood beams and arts-and-crafts-style detailing (though the sound and video systems have been updated). But the big change is in the food.

A new team in the kitchen is doing it all from scratch. That includes executive chef Ramiro Rivera, an alumnus of Horseradish Grill, and Chapin Vilasineekul who oversees the considerable portion of the menu given over to sushi. Now this is not classic Japanese sushi; Vilasineekul, as a matter of fact, is a Thai-Hawaiian. Purists might scoff at offerings like the Kobe Culotte, but that would be their loss. This is thin beef medallions seared just enough to acquire a light charred crust but still carpaccio-red within, accompanied by truffle-scented matchstick fries and two yummy sauces, wasabi cream and hot mustard. The plate appeals to both eye and palate. Ample enough to share or be the centerpiece of one person’s meal, it’s also a bargain at $14.99 – and just about the priciest item available.

Overall, Park Tavern still does very approachable bar food. There are mainly small plates – sushi and otherwise – that are easily nibbled and shared, plus a few baskets and sandwiches. MDT Hint: Be sure to check out the new burger offerings! It’s informal food for a relaxed setting but very well executed. The pulled-pork sandwich, for example, is stuffed with exceptionally tender meat and slathered with a punchy, rich, brick-red barbecue sauce. Complement that with the simple jicama slaw – crunchy, cooling and light. Ceviche – with a salad-like tomato-to-fish ratio – is refreshing and mild, without the acid bite and intense chili of some other versions. It’s accessible, which seems true of all the offerings here.

We know you have fond memories of the old Park Tavern but it’s time to make some new ones Threaders! So, cleanse your mind because this place just might become your go-to destination not just for all its amazing events but for its new menu as well. Okay, so some great ideas start out as pure flukes. When ParkGrounds opened almost three years ago, the dog park was, dare we say, just a bonus feature. There was a huge outdoor space attached to the coffeehouse so the dog park seemed like as good a use as any. Not to mention it was a way to bring attention to the off-the-beaten path Reynoldstown location. No one at ParkGrounds knew they had hit pay dirt on a budding trend. Today, the dog park is as much a part of ParkGrounds as the great coffee. Located away from the trendier Midtown or Buckhead areas and bordering the more well-known hipster hood of Grant Park, ParkGrounds is quite neighborly.

On any given weekend, don’t be surprised to see as many as 25 dogs, along with their owners, soaking in quality time. Sit outside on a nice day and watch your baby play with the other canines or keep a watchful eye from the warm and cozy inside. There are rules, and keeping up with your pooch is numero uno. “You would think that with so many dogs out there, there wouldn’t be a lot of space to run but sometimes they run in packs,” says ParkGrounds general manager Alfred Lopez. “Sometimes they just like to chill-out.”

Comfortable dog park aside, not to mention unique, individual dog treats starting for as little as 25 cents, Lopez says “What really makes this place stand out is our great coffee.” ParkGrounds is no Starbucks copycat either. “The style of barista-ing that we do here is along the same lines as places like Aurora or Octane,” Lopez explains.

When it comes to brewing techniques, Lopez believes ParkGrounds stands alone in Atlanta. “As far as I know, and if anybody can correct me, they are more than welcomed to, we offer the most selection as far as brewing techniques in a single shop.” There are at least six, including Chemex, one of the most modern, and the Pour-Over, one of the most basic. Some ParkGrounds specialties include the Honey Vanilla and the Almonilla. “Surprisingly,” adds Lopez, “our cappuccino is one of our biggest sellers.” And there are even cold versions for many of the drinks.

Counter Culture Coffee, based in Durham, is their main bean of choice but ParkGrounds can’t be relegated to just the coffee or the dogs for that matter. The food is good too, with the R. Town, two eggs scrambled with cheddar jack cheese and a sliced tomato on a buttermilk biscuit, toast or English muffin and the French toast drawing rave reviews. Best yet, breakfast can be an all day affair. Baked goodies like scones and cupcakes from Bakeshop and other local bakeries are also treats. So is the free wi-fi and the great vibes streaming from Pandora.

It’s not flashy, but it is comfy. It’s little wonder some people park here all day. Talk about grounding the little things in life and you’ve summed up ParkGrounds.

The classes are diverse in style as well and include hip-hop, jazz, ballet, contemporary, cardio salsa, classically stretch and more. The one constant at Gotta Dance Atlanta is the family-like atmosphere. “It’s like a second home to me,” says Brandon Womack, hip-hop instructor and graduate of the Gotta Dance work- study program, in which Gotta Dance trades studio work for free classes to young dancers. “I’m here all day everyday because I love the environment, and I teach beginning hip-hop the way I wanted to learn. I focus on specific parts of the combination because it’s not about showing off as a teacher. Your students should look good and that takes repetition.”

Womack is also a founding member of the dance team based out of Gotta Dance, Atlanta Swagger Crew, which can currently be seen on the television series America’s Best Dance Crew. Taverna Fiorentina, which has been turning out terrific food since it opened a couple of years ago in a Cobb Parkway shopping center, proves that inspired restaurateurs can make magic, even in a strip mall setting.

In fact, co-owners Paolo Tondo, the Italian-born chef, and Madrid native Jasmin Reyes Scott, the sommelier, have created an intimate, lively place in an unexpected and modestly scaled storefront. The unpretentious warmth of their welcome is a factor. So is the loyal clientele they’ve built up. Even on a chilly weekday evening, the room was nearly full. Which proves that everybody loves a neighborhood tavern where the food is irresistible and they know your name. If they don’t know yours yet, get in the car and go.

Several talented chefs have had the helm here, but now Tondo himself is running the kitchen and creating the menu. His work is authentic – well, he trained back home in Tuscany – and simultaneously inventive. Could his degree in electromechanical engineering account for that?

Take for instance, his deconstructionist approach to the Caesar salad: the anchovies and egg – a whole soft-boiled one – remain exactly what they are rather than being blurred into the dressing. Another example is a special appetizer, carpaccio di polpo (octopus). Strictly speaking, carpaccio is raw meat but this has been boiled then forced salami-like through a tube. Thin, pretty slices – cream-colored, with pink-tinged, blossom-like irregular edges – are laid on a plate and topped with a crisp little salad. The octopus retains none of that chew-it-forever texture but, indeed, feels like tender meat in the mouth. Language cops may object, but IMHO Tondo can call it carpaccio if he wants.

Two pasta offerings show off his ability to create a melange of ingredients that still allows each flavor to come through clearly and vividly. A special of veal-stuffed agnolotti was sauced with an intensely meaty red wine-beef reduction, which still did not overwhelm the generous strewing of diced fresh tomato. A regular offering, agnolotti di suino – stuffed with pork, in a porcini cream sauce – is a knockout. The fragrances of both the pork and the porcini are clear and together they’re swoon inducing. The 2004 Tiziano Chianti Classico, a bargain at $43, is especially well matched with that dish: velvety and complex with notes of cherry, violet and tobacco.

We were also enchanted by the ravioli gnudi – called nude because it’s unencumbered by pasta. These are rich, fluffy and possibly addictive dumplings of spinach and ricotta. Seared tilapia, a special, in a sprightly piccata sauce over spinach and artichokes was light yet hearty. Even more warming is the pappardelle with earthy wild boar ragu, which has understandably been a menu standby from the start. Suburbanites might riot if it were removed. When every neighborhood – intown or elsewhere – has a restaurant this inviting, life will be perfect.
