The Atlanta location of the Florida-born chain offers a safe alternative to PERC, the harsh chemical solvent that most dry-cleaners use. “What we use is GreenEarth, which is clear and odorless,” Antun says. “It’s a silicone-based solvent that comes from sand.”

OXXO’s eco-friendly practices go beyond their solvent. Instead of the standard dry cleaners’ boiler room, which sends out chemicals into the air by way of smoke or steam, OXXO Care Cleaners uses a machine that actually takes any lingering chemicals out of the clothes.  

“It’s great for people with allergies,” Antun says. “Since we remove the chemicals, there’s nothing going into your pores. It’s better for people and pets [around you] because they aren’t inhaling chemicals.”

The method also preserves the color of your clothing. “With no chemicals to break down the clothes, it extends their lifetime,” Antun adds.  

The boutique-style store also offers comfortable amenities (the ample air conditioning flows and music plays softly) and some convenient features that make picking up your green clean laundry much easier. First-time customers answer questions about their dry cleaning particulars (do you like starch, do you like a crease, etc.) so there’s no need to  answer questions every time they come in. The prices are posted behind the register, so you know exactly what you’re paying up front.  

And one tech-savvy advancement makes picking up dry-cleaning more convenient than ever. While the store stays open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., each first-time customer is issued an ATM-like card and a bag and can even set up a pre-paid plan. This allows them to utilize the store’s 24-hour automatic laundry service. Need to drop off your laundry after a late-night shift? No problem. Put the dirty clothes in the bag (along with any special instructions) and slide your card in the ATM-style system. A drawer will open and you can safely leave your clothes for next-morning service.
